The National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) was created in 1957 to foster collaboration among electronic manufacturers. During its early years, NMEA focused on enhancing communication among manufacturers. NMEA 1803, and its successor NMEA 2000, are plug-and-play communications protocols designed by NMEA that allow various manufacturers’ devices to connect with one another.

GPS receivers, autopilots, wind instruments, depth sounders, navigation instruments, engine instruments, and nautical chart plotters can be connected to the NMEA 2000 network. For example, the signals from the GPS receiver can be used to make the autopilot correct the course, and the engine RPM and fuel injection rate can be used to figure out how much fuel is left.

Most of the size of the network you build will depend on how big your boat is. You probably only need a receiver and a Chartplotter on a smaller boat. However, you can add more NMEA 2000-compatible devices if you have a larger boat or if you often need remote controllers nearby, like on a swim platform. The limit is 50, which is much more than most boaters will ever need. This is where everything starts, so buying a good one is wise.

Yes, a power supply is necessary for any NMEA 2000 network. The NMEA 2000 backbone is the sole source of power for a significant number of the devices that make up the NMEA 2000 standard; this electricity is then utilized to run the devices.
